National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

The National Flood Insurance Program identifies flood-prone areas in the country, makes flood insurance available to property owners in participating communities and encourages efforts to mitigate flood hazards. While participation is voluntary for the local government, once a community decides to participate, flood insurance becomes mandatory for any properties – and therefore, landowners – in the 100-year flood plain (also known as Special Flood Hazard Areas) secured by federal loans or by mortgage loans made by federally regulated lenders.
