Water Quality Trading

Water quality trading is a market-based concept that may help developers, home builders, and others to comply with their stormwater or wastewater discharge requirements while saving money. Where states have developed trading programs, trading can allow a home builder to partially control stormwater discharges at the building project by purchasing pollutant reduction credits that were generated offsite by others who have installed BMPs at lower cost. The trade would allow the environmental goals for the building project to be met while lowering costs for the project.
